Yahan Lu

Postdoctoral Researcher ·

Yahan is a postdoctoral researcher at the Sustainable Urban Multimodal Mobility (SUM) Lab at Delft University of Technology. Her research integrates operations research and machine learning to address large-scale optimization problems in multimodal transportation systems under uncertainty, with a particular focus on the interaction between supply-side operations and demand-side behaviour.

Her long-term research goal is to leverage advances in mathematical and computational science approaches to improve the design and operation of transport systems as they adapt to emerging demands and disruptions. Her research interests include:

  • Optimization under uncertainty, including stochastic programming, robust optimization, and distributionally robust optimization
  • Operations Research algorithms, including Benders decomposition, column generation, and matheuristics
  • Combining machine learning and optimization to improve decision-making under uncertainty

She have applied these methods to problems such as line planning in both single-modal and multi-modal transit systems, train timetabling and demand management, train scheduling and dynamic pricing, fleet sizing and vehicle routing for on-demand services, and coordinated multimodal service design for Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platforms.

Yahan obtained her PhD in Systems Science from Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU), where her doctoral research focused on robust timetabling and demand management in urban rail transit. During her PhD, she has visited the Operations, Planning, Accounting and Control group at Eindhoven University of Technology from October 2022 to September 2023. She also hold a Bachelor’s degree in Railway Transportation, with a specialization in Mathematics, from BJTU.
